RECYCLING NYC HISTORY: MODERN DESIGN FROM
ANTIQUE LUMBER
“We design according t= o our aesthetic and build pieces that we would want to live with. So we were quite happy to see that= other people responded so enthusiastically” says Galus Halasz of RG Furnitu= re Design. “Our success has given us the opportunity to put new ideas into production.”
Each minimalist designed pie=
ce is
individually handcrafted to preserve the aesthetic richness and historical
patina of the wood. Unlike wo=
od that’s
made to look old, antique lumber reveals the authenticity and character of
age. The quality of the wood =
and
the touch of the artisan combine to create furniture that is both sculptural
and functional. “I initially eng=
aged
with this material, while creating sculpture reminiscent of my paintings. In my work, subtle shifts of tone,=
rich
texture, and a whimsical use of inscribed line convey a historical sense of
space and time,” says artist and co-founder Rick Lewis.
“I have enjoyed workin= g on a one-to-one basis with our clients to produce custom designs. The pieces have to fit the client’s spatial environment and lifestyle. So we work with them from the desi= gn inception to the completed project,” says Mr. Lewis.
